If you are a beginner plant lover searching for a low-maintenance houseplant, then the trending plant for 2025 may be what you're looking for. According to new data by The Sill, cacti are taking center-stage as the “it” plant to have this year.

I spoke with Paris Lalicata, Head of Plant Education and Community at The Sill, to learn more about why cacti are becoming so popular and what varieties are best for beginner growers.

Why Cacti is the Trending Plant of 2025

“Cacti are trending this year not only for their low-maintenance nature but for their unique, sculptural appearances! Cacti come in a diverse range of quirky shapes, sizes, and vibrant colors, so there's certainly a cactus to suit every aesthetic and lifestyle,” Lalicata explains.

She continues, “There are both desert cacti, which thrive in dry, sunny environments, and jungle cacti, which prefer more humidity and indirect light. This variety makes it easy to find a cactus that fits perfectly with your indoor environment and care preferences.”

Best Cacti Types for Beginners to Grow

Although cacti is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plant, I had to ask Lalicata which cacti would be the best for beginners to buy from The Sill and grow. Here are her top recommendations:

  1. Cuddly Cactus: The Cuddly Cactus gets its name due to the absence of spine clusters. They are perfect for an indoor garden for those who love cacti without the harmful spines.

  2. Prickly Pear Cactus: The prickly pear cactus is a drought-tolerant cactus known for its flat, paddle-shaped pads covered in spines that create vibrant yellow, orange, or red flowers.

  3. Mistletoe Cactus: The Mistletoe Cactus is a jungle cactus that is native to wet rain forests rather than arid deserts. It features pencil-thin, spineless green stems that grow into trailing vines, reaching up to 6 feet long!

You can try out your green thumb with one of these beginner cacti. The Sill also has many other types of cacti, succulents, flowers, and plants to choose from if you want to bring your home to life with a collection of houseplants.
